Too Busy Making My Dreams A Reality...

As you all may know, my name is Charlie Brianna, I'm 21 years young, and I'm a wardrobe stylist, designer/owner of Blindfold Eye wear, and dancer. Dancing has always been my number one passion, until I couldn't afford to go back to California Institute of the Arts during my sophomore year, and that's when my passion for fashion really began to soar. Though I've always been into getting all dressed up, I didn't become active in the fashion industry business until 2009. Two years later, I have an ever growing Styling Resume and I am thankful for all of the opportunities I am continually blessed with.

I decided this post was necessary for my blog because I receive tons of emails, texts, and Facebook messages asking for advice on how to get started in the styling business, or even in the fashion industry in general. Although I have yet to even come close to reaching the high caliber I dream to, it has undoubtedly been a never ending learning experience thus far.

First things first, set a concrete goal for yourself and persistently work towards it. We have the world at our fingertips, and all it takes is research. If becoming a stylist is your desire, here's my advice to you: Intern at PR firms, magazine offices, or as a wardrobe assistant to creditable stylists. You have to be willing to work for free, before you start making money. Collaborate with fellow photographers, stylists, and/or models to see your vision come alive. Read fashion blogs and websites. And like my dad always says, "Surround yourself with positive people and those who share similar interests".

Innovation. Not only in fashion, but in every business it is imperative that you be innovative. Here's a few questions to ask yourself frequently: Why will my outreach be better than the next person's? What makes my style unique? How can my approach in the fashion industry be one that is impactive and timeless? How will I stay relevent?

Network. Believe it or not, networking is the bread and butter of the business because unfortunately, it's all about who you know. Go out to social events in the field. Whether it be fashion shows, trunk shows, release parties, launches, installations, etc. Networking is almost like selling yourself. You may feel uncomfortable at first but it's better to have said too much about yourself than not enough. ALWAYS introduce yourself. Try to have business cards at all times. And last but not least, follow up! If you make a connection, keep in touch.

My dad always told me, "There's always someone who wants your spot. And there's always someone who has been where you are now, but isn't willing to share advice." So stay humble, and stay hungry. This is not a game. All that you see is GLAMOUR, but behind the scenes is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. You have to be tough to get through each and every day as a wardrobe stylist, as it is not always easy...

So until next time, I'll leave you with this; Be innovative, creative, network, stay inspired, and most importantly, stay hungry.

Fashion stylist, wardrobe stylist, or whatever you want to call it … It is one of the most sought after careers of the moment. And why shouldn’t it be? It’s a pretty sweet job. I mean you get to shop and hang out with beautiful people all day.

Of course, those aren’t the only reasons to consider wardrobe styling as a career. We have created a Top 10 List of Reasons Why Being a Stylist is the Best Job EVER! Check it out …

1.) Shopping, shopping, and more shopping! If you love to shop, then wardrobe styling is definitely the job for you. Your job is to shop. Shopping in department stores, showrooms, boutiques, costume houses … you get paid to be a shopping machine.

2.) Beautiful clothes are your new best friends: As an aspiring wardrobe stylist you probably have spent most of your life drooling over fashion magazines and clothes that cost more than your rent. As as working stylist you will get to see and touch these beauties on a regular basis. Its a dream come true.

3.) Being your own boss (sorta): Gone are the days of having one big scary boss. When you are a stylist you are working for yourself. Sure you will have clients that act as your boss, but those are on a job by job basis. Being your own boss is a beautiful thing.

4.) Your workday is always different: No Groundhog Day here! When you are a stylist everyday is different. One day you may be working on a music video, another day you might be dressing models for a music video. Everyday is a surprise in this profession.

5.) Working with the beautiful, the talented, and the famous: Who needs stylists anyway? Celebrities, musicians, and models mostly. If you are a stylist guess who you will be interacting with at work … Exactly!

6.) Traveling: This all depends on your client, of course, but stylists tend to do a bit of traveling. New York, Japan, Los Angeles, Paris … you never know where you’ll end up for a job.

7.) Wave bye, bye to your boring desk job! If being chained to a desk is your biggest nightmare, then you will be happy to find out that you don’t have to spend too much time there. A lot of your job will involve being on set or in your car.

8.) Free clothes: We won’t lie, just because you are a stylist doesn’t means its going to be raining clothes 24/7 but occasionally the fashion fairy will drop a few treats in your closet.

9.) Backstage access to cool events: When you are dressing celebs and musicians you go where they go, which means backstage access to TV shows, concerts, and other cool events.

10.) Meeting new people: Like we mentioned earlier, your workday will always be different and that means meeting different people. Every job opens up the door for meeting new directors, photographers, makeup artists, hair people, models, celebrities, other stylists, and the list goes on …

Paris Fashion Week. Although Dw received an unbelievable amount of negative feedback, as a stylist and fashion harlot, I think the collection is dope. It is very bold for Spring/Summer, given the leather and fur pieces, but nothing short of amazing-Especially since Kanye is new on the scene as far as designing goes. Overall, I love!

Before working as an understudy PR/Stylist for the showroom, I pulled there a couple of times for Shaunie O'Neal and Amber Riley while I was Mr. Bradshaw's assistant. Now, I'll be gaining some experience in public relations while still meeting all of the stylists who come through! Very excited for the connections to be made.

I was heavily inspired by this collection. I've never been extremely feminine when it comes to my personal style which is why this particular line reminds me of myself, just a more expensive taste. Suits are always great for women as long as it is tailored and accessorized the right way. Because if it isn't, your cute little suit just might look like office attire. And that's a no no!
